Inboard Racing: A Wild Ride $22.66 Read about the adventures and mis-adventurers of a rookie inboard hydroplane driver as he learns how to drive an eleven foot long, ninety mile per hour, alky-burning prop-rider on race courses in California, Arizona, Utah, and Washington. Experience the wild elation of victory and the disappointment of defeat as the author relates various anecdotes of accidents, engine explosions, lost opportunities, bad decisions, and lucky wins. Gain insight into the behind-the-scenes activity that supports power boat racing: the seemingly endless hours of engine building and hull maintenance that are required in preparation for a few minutes of all-out racing action on Sunday afternoon. Tag along as the author chases parts, repairs his hull, re-installs the engine, and safety-wires everything. Then strap on a Gentex or a Lifeline jacket and a Bell helmet and join Bob Foley on A Wild Ride. |

Whiskey Is My Habit, Women Is All I Crave: The Best of Leroy Carr $15.98 The 40 tracks compiled on this two-disc set represent the entire span of pianist and singer Leroy Carr’s recording career that spanned a brief seven years, from 1928-1935. The material represented here — all but one of these tracks were recorded for the Vocalion label — features accompaniment by guitarist Scrapper Blackwell on all but one selection, and Josh White on a handful as well. Carr’s material here ranges from the classic piano blues of the era that spawned Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith to vaudeville and hokum tunes made popular by artists like Tampa Red and Georgia Tom. Carr’s voice is the haunting thing here; it’s higher and very clear, sweet almost, as evidenced by most of these sides. But there was an edge, too; one that belied a kind of pathos underneath even the most cheery material — check “Mean Mistreater Blues” or “Bread Baker.” But the darker material such as “Suicide Blues” (one of six previously unissued performances), “Straight Alky Blues,” or “Shinin’ Pistol,” is strange and eerie given Carr’s smooth approach. Carr may not be the most well-known bluesman of the era, but his contribution is profound and lasting. This collection puts to shame almost all others with the exception of the multi-volume complete recordings on Document. But given the fact that these sides are wonderfully remastered, and 40 tracks are enough for virtually anybody but the hardest core blues punter, this is the set to have. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music GuidePerformers: Scrapper Blackwell – Guitar; Leroy Carr – Piano, Vocals; Josh White – Guitar |

Wreckage $4.48 “[Wreckage] is a really remarkable piece of work. In the foreground is a caper story; in the background, a poetically expressed, apocalyptic history of Liverpool.” —The Daily TelegraphThat woman with the grey hair and the specs and the kind face and the accent all like his grandmother, his nain in hospital and when she can talk that is what she sounds like. Don’thitmepleasedon’thitme. These women falling, sliding off this earth and not just from violence but the one commonality that turns life to a wreck—age. After their botched and brutal mission to punish a one-armed man in a small Welsh village, Darren and Alastair head back to Liverpool to report to their mob boss. On the way home, Darren robs a rural postal office in Wales that serves as a bank and needlessly cracks the skull of a little old postal lady. Darren’s eyes are full of fire. “We’re rich, Alastair!” But Alastair sees his own nain in this elderly woman and falls victim to his conscience. Darren has finally gone too far.As Alastair and Darren weave their way through the lowlife milieu of Liverpool, we hear many voices: the alky, the crack addict, the busman, the whores, the gangsters, and Darren’s many victims. But we also hear the voices of their ancestors going back generations of unthinkable grief and poverty. A fascinating sequel to Stump, which Irvine Welsh calls “a magnificent novel of loss and obsession . . . [by] a major talent.” |

Del-Fi Hotrodders: The Darts, The De-Fenders, The Deuce Coupes $16.98 This anthology assembles the Darts’ Hollywood Drag (1963), the De-Fenders Drag Beat (1963) and the Deuce Coupes’ Hotrodder’s Choice (1963) on to the appropriately-named Del-Fi Hotrodders (2004) double-CD set. Although the respective names of the three combos suggest different bands, producer Bob Keane actually amassed an all-star cast of West Coast studio instrumentalists, mixed in some canned effects of hot rods peeling out or motoring up and ultimately created several platters of original material. Notable session heavies participating in these recordings include Glenn Ross Campbell (guitar), David Gates (guitar), Earl Palmer (drums), Michel Rubini (keyboards), Leon Russell (keyboards) — credited as Russell Bridges — Plas Johnson (sax), Tommy Tedesco (guitar), Ray Pohlman (bass), Hal Blaine (drums), Bill Pitman (guitar), Jimmy Bond (bass), Jay Migliori, (sax), Jim Horn (sax), Roy Caton (trumpet), Dale Hallcom (bass) and Larry Bright (guitar). Under the guise of the Darts, these A-list players perform the slight rural and ramblin’ “Street Machine,” the noir “Hippie’s Delight” and the pedal-to-the-metal, rubber burnin’ “Alky Burner,” “Detroit Iron” and “Slauson & Soto” and the forceful fretwork of the title track “Hollywood Drag.” The De-Fenders’ release boasts a practically indiscernible reading of the Beach Boys’ “Little Deuce Coupe,” suffering from the same generic prototypical aural aerobics given to the lightly syncopated overhaul of Dale Hawkins’ “Suzy Q” renamed “Deuces Wild.” Additional selections worthy of spinning are Tommy Tedesco’s (guitar) inspired swagger and twang on “Taco Wagon,” the soulful, bluesy “Movin’ and Groovin’” and the distinct R&B-influenced “Wheelin’ Home.” The Deuce Coupes’ collection is arguably the best of the lot with the limber “Nite Prowler,” as well as the belligerent “Satan’s Chariot.” Yet it is “Gear Masher” that takes the prize for the nastiest automobile sounds, giving the listener an impression of what a tortured and possessed car must sound like. Needless to say, for fans of the genre, Del-Fi Hotrodders is a thrill-a-minute highly recommended ride. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music GuidePerformers: Hal Blaine – Drums; Jimmy Bond – Bass; Glenn Ross Campbell – Guitar; Frank Capp – Drums; Roy Caton – Trumpet; Dale Hallcom – Bass; |

Call Someplace Paradise $22.98 Venice, California gave up its status as a city seventy years ago and still became one of the world’s most stubbornly independent communities. Acknowledged as a unique urban environment, Venice is the seaside playpen where trends are born, a tourist magnet rivaled only by Disneyland, and a microcosm of everything that’s good and bad about America. Half the stars of movies and music have lived there at some stage of their careers. Probably more film footage exists of the Venice boardwalk than of any other stretch of real estate. Millions of people have seen innumerable images of Venice on TV and in movies, and visited the boardwalk, and wondered how it would be to live in such a crazy place, and even wished they dared to throw caution to the winds and move to Edge City. Most books about Venice have been pictorial, poetic, or scholarly. Call Someplace Paradise is a kaleidoscopic collection of observations from the viewpoint of an inhabitant over more than half a decade, 1978-84. Unlike the sociologists and bureaucrats who came from afar to scrutinize Venice, I had the advantage of living there. Venice is a place where it’s worth knowing what went on there in any period, the kind of place that lives in legend, an American Shangri-la. In many people’s minds it’s the epitome of hip. Interest in Venice will only increase when its Centennial comes up in 2005. Call Someplace Paradise is for anyone who lives there now, or used to, or ever wanted to, or might some day. It’s for people from other countries, curious about life in this almost anarchistic milieu; for futurologists, sociologists, urbanologists, economists, aging hippies, and libertarians. It covers Venice shrines, institutions, historical sites and monuments: the Gas House, the pier, the Venice Beachhead, Tony Bill’s 73 Market Street studio, the canals, A Change of Hobbit, the street where part of A Touch of Evil was filmed, Beyond Illusions bookstore, the place where Jim Morrison made a film, the Fox Venice Theatre, the cultural centers Beyond Baroque and SPARC. Some of the local characters and celebrities in Call Someplace Paradise: Swami X; Susan Moscowitz the Doll Lady of Venice, beatnik painter Robert Farrington, LA Fine Arts Squad muralist John Wehrle, rollerskater/guitarist/Sufi Harry Perry, Alky Bob, Uncle Bill, Jingles, Ananda the drama queen, the guy with a bullet in his spine, Hare Krishnas, landlords who give free enterprise a bad name, Greenie the stalker, Beach Boy Dennis Wilson, silent film star Mary Miles Minter, Ernie the poor little rich boy, the grocery cart bounty hunter, sex surrogate Joan Silverthorn, the Circle Man, the ubiquitous religious graffiti nut, and a ton of other weird folk, substance abusers, professional oddballs, buskers, con artists, deadbeats, grifters and street people. Here are some other things in Call Someplace Paradise: the boardwalk and beach, vendors versus the law, skaters versus the law, the powerful senior citizens’ lobby, living at the… |
