Saturday, May 30th, 2009how to change a shifter rod on a 1982 motorcycle?
the bike is a 1982 ironhead harley davidson 1000 sportster 4 speed… the shifter rod is very loose i can move it up and down…. i can push in on it and get the bike to go thru the gears… how hard of a fix is it to replace a shifter rod for this bike
if I understand your question correctly it sounds like you need a new outer shifter shaft bushing.
to change it just take off your primary cover,press the old bushing out & the new one back in. be sure to put in a new oil seal too.
you also have an inner shifter shaft bushing but its harder to change & sometimes you can get by with just changing the outer one.
