pigeon racing how lower class is it ?
My wife has a friend who has several pigeon lofts and they are so disgusting he never wins anything i’m just wondering if you have to be a scumbag to partake in this sport or wether it’s merely a coincidence.
just to also add pigeons are flying rats who spread disease and are PESTS
it’s not about how the person is it’s just i have always seen it as a scummy thing to do and don’t know why he wastes his money on it and ask us to borrow money because he has wasted his on pigeons
I’ll have you know that pigeons are one of the most intelligent animals in the world, and should be respected. Homing pigeons have been recorded to fly over 60 miles per hour without much effort, and near 100 miles per hour in some cases. They’ve also been recorded to come back home from a completely unfamiliar location 1,500 MILES AWAY. Them being one of the only 6 species in the world able to identify their reflection in a mirror as themself and not another animal, they really are one of the most intelligent animals in the world. You can’t deny the facts.
Pigeons have also been a very important part of our history. They were first domesticated around the ancient Egyptian times by pharaohs, and since then have been a dependable way of communication. Homing pigeons brought back news of victory in Rome, and sent important messages in both WWI and II when our own intelligence failed us. One pigeon, named G.I.Joe, came back with a message during WWII that saved an estimated 1,000+ lives that would have died from friendly fire. Out of the 54 animals that were given the Dickins Medal (animal version of the V.C.) after WWII, 32 of them were given to pigeons. Oh and you know that cute little white dove people consider the bird of peace and love? There is no scientific difference between pigeons and doves, except what we consider ‘pigeons’ are larger in size and the cere above the beak tends to be more noticable. Pigeons are actually Rock Doves, so anyone who hates pigeons hates doves as well. Pigeons also aren’t just the birds you see in a big city. There are over 250 different breeds or species of pigeons. I bet you didn’t know that.
Pigeon racing is a very popular sport, and is not low class at all. Even owning or raising pigeons is not low class. Several kings, queens, celebrities, and others have owned pigeons throughout history. White homing pigeons are released at special occasions and are used at Disney World. They are also an important symbol in many religions. Many, many breeds of pigeons were vital to Charles Darwin’s evolution theory, and he quickly grew attached to them. Millions of people worldwide are pigeon fanciers, believe it or not. There are hundreds of pigeon clubs and combines that hold several shows and races for pigeons each year. Some races have money prizes, while others give trophies or plaques. A good bloodlined purebred racing homer will go for hundreds of dollars. Raising, training, showing, and/or racing pigeons teaches someone a lot of things. The avid fancier will know a lot about medicine and diseases, a bit of history, genetics, what and what not to feed, and how to plan and keep records of things. Having pigeons gives you something to do and care for. Many people have caught the ‘pigeon bug’, meaning once they started raising them, they loved them and always will. Caring for pigeons is also relieves stress. I know this from my own experience, and others will agree that there is nothing better than watching your flock zip through the sky on a sunny day. They are the true acrobats of the sky.
Pigeons are NOT ‘rats with wings’. You are more likely to catch the avain flu from a gorilla with wings five states away in a zoo. This is also true with many other diseases pigeons are said to spread. WE spread more diseases than pigeons do. AIDS, the flu, mono, MRSA, the plague – we’ve carried it all. Pigeons only spread their sickness to their own kind really, and even then it isn’t likely. I rarely have a sick pigeon in my loft, and if I do, it rarely effects others in the loft. And these are DOMESTIC, not WILD. Wild birds are much more resistant to disease since in order to survive in the wild, they must be healthy. Feral pigeons are used to the city life and all the bacteria that comes with it. WE make more mess, WE take up more space, WE spread more diseases, than any pigeon ever will.
Sorry to say it….but…only a scumbag would say such horrible things about pigeon racing, and pigeons themselves. You have the right to have an opinion, but you should know what you’re dealing with before you go saying things like that.
Just because you think pigeons are bad, and the guy is stupid for spending so much money on his birds, does not mean pigeons and/or the sport of racing them is low class.
Lumping a wild pigeon with a purebred racing pigeon is like lumping a plowing donkey with a thouroughbred racing horse – you just can’t do it.
